Small-Flowered Packing Leaf is a plant 1-2 m tall. Basal leaf is 1 or 2; leaf sheath 3-50 cm. Stem leaf is 1; leaf sheath 3-5 cm; leaf-stalk 7.5-60 cm, pulvinus 2-7 cm; leaf blade ovate to elliptic, 25-55 x 8-20 cm, thinly leathery, hairless, base rounded with an pointed center, tip tapering. Flower clusters are stalkless, composed of 4 or 5 or more spikelets, spherical, 3-8 cm in diameter; bracts crowded, oblong, 2--2.5 cm, tip with a needle-like tip. Flowers are 2 per bract, white to yellowish white. Sepals are linear, about 5 mm. Flower tube is about 8 mm; petals elliptic, about 5 × 2 mm. Outer staminodes obovate, about 5 mm. Fruits are oblong, about 1.2 cm; skin thin, seed 1, ellipsoid, about 1 cm; aril red. Small-Flowered Packing Leaf is found in Nepal to S. China and SE Asia, at altitudes up to 1500 m. Leaves are used for wrapping food items like cooked rice, raw sugar, common salt, dry fish, etc. Flowering: May-August.
