Botanical name: Plumeria inodora Family: Apocynaceae (Oleander family)
Synonyms: Plumeria alba var. inodora, Plumeria alba var. fragrans Scentless Frangipani is a small rounded deciduous tree
that grows in a vase-shape to 15-25 ft tall. It bears non-fragrant
5-petaled flowers with yellow centers, 7-8 cm across, in clusters at
the branch tips. Upright branches are thick but weak, and have a milky
sap. Inverted-lanceshaped to obovate green leaves up to 30 cm long, dark
green above, paler beneath. They are spirally
clustered at the stem ends. It is often confused with
Plumeria obtusa and the white
flowered variety of the
Plumeria rubra which are
intensely fragrant and which often are mistakenly called Plumeria alba.
Scentless Frangipani is native to Colombia, Guyana, Venezuela, Venezuelan
Antilles, cultivated elsewhere. It is cultivated in NE India.
