Japanese Astilbe is a herbaceous perennial that spreads via underground rhizomes. These plume-flowered plants have very handsome fern-like foliage, usually dark glossy green, and stiff stems that always hold the elegant plumes aloft. The plants sport abundant, open panicles of sparkling, clear pink flower plumes borne on upright, reddish stems. They are popular garden plants with numerous cultivars. In India they are cultivated in hill stations.
