Horse Bush is a shrub or small tree up to 3 m tall.
Its pinnate, stalked leaves have leaflets that are elliptic to broadly
egg-shaped, the underside of which are covered with fine hairs. The at
branch-ends leaflet is 5-17 by 2.5-8.5 cm, and the lateral leaflets
3-11 by 1.5-6 cm. Flowers are white; standard broadly obovate or
elliptic, 1-1.3 cm x 6-10 mm, clawed; wings narrowly elliptic, 1.1-1.2
cm x 1-2 mm, clawed; keel broader than wings, 1.1-1.2 cm x 3-5 mm,
clawed. Sepal-cup is 4-5 mm, upper lobe 2-toothed at tip. Stamens are
about 1 cm, pistil u[ to 1.5 cm, ovary silky, style about 1.2 cm. Its
thick, elongated, leathery fruit pods consist of 3-8 segments that are
1-seeded, broadly elliptical-oblong to oblong, and 5-10 by 3.5-5 mm. It
grows on rocky or sandy seashores or tidal mud, monsoon forest edges,
river banks, rocky cliffs, savanna, and secondary forests from sea
level up to 180 m altitude. Horse Bush is found in Tropical Asia,
Africa and Australia.
