Synonyms: Sicyos garcini, Ctenolepis garcini

Deccan Bur Cucumber is an annual vine with slender stem, climbing using tendrils. It is named for Laurent Garcen, 18th century French botanist who traveled extensively in India. Leaves are 1-4 cm across, deeply palmately 5 lobed, lobes hairy on both surfaces, toothed, with a fine point at the tip, base narrowed. Flowers very small, yellow, pinwheel shaped. Male flowers are small, borne in cymes. Female flowers are borne singly. Fruit is broader than long, up to 1 x 0.5 cm, bright red, kidney-shaped or hammer-shaped, seeds oblong. Deccan Bur Cucumber is found in Peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Flowering: December-January.
