Botanical name: Phlogacanthus pubinervius    Family: Acanthaceae (Acanthus family)

Velvety Flame-Acanthus is a shrub up to 5 m tall, much branched. Flowers are orange, about 1.8 cm, outside velvet-hairy; tube about 1.3 cm, slightly curved; lower lip deeply 3-lobed, lobes ovate; upper lip 2-cleft. Stamens are much protruding; filaments about 2.5 cm, style about 2 cm. Sepal-cup is 7-8 mm; sepals linear-lanceshaped, unequal, outside velvet-hairy, inside gray woolly. Flower-stalk 0.8-1.5 cm. Flowers are borne in cymes in leaf-axils, 1-4-flowered, carried on flower-cluster-stalk 0.8-1.6 cm, 4-angled, velvet-hairy. Leaf-stalks are 0.5-2 cm; leaf blade elliptic-oblong to oblong, 8-18 x 3.5-5 cm, below finely velvet-hairy along veins, above rough, secondary veins 5-7 on each side of midvein, base narrowed, margin wavy, tip tapering to long tapering. Capsule is 2.5-3 cm, hairless, 8-seeded. Velvety Flame-Acanthus is found in forests, thickets, at altitudes of 700-1700 m, in Nepal, East Himalaya, China, Myanmar.
