Botanical name: Capsicum chinense x Capsicum frutescens Family: Solanaceae (Potato family)
Native to Assam, Tezpur Chilli is the plant that produces one of the hottest chillies on earth. Molecular analysis has revealed that it is a naturally occuring hybrid between Capsicum chinense and Capsicum frutescens. Flowers do not look very different from the normal chilli flowers. However, the plant can grow tall, like a shrub. Tezpur Chilli is an old favourite in the North-East. Known in Manipuri as Oomorok (tree pepper), it is a much loved chilli in Manipur.
