Tall Scaly Rhododendron is similar to
Pink Scaly Rhododendron, but
a taller shrub 50-150 cm. It is named
for Frederick Marshman Bailey (1882-1967) who was an army lieutenant in
Indian Army in the British era. Leaves are larger and broader, elliptic
or obovate, 2-4.5 x 1-2 cm, very densely, often brownish, scaly,
usually brown on the underside, leaf-stalks 0.3-1.5 cm. Flowers are
3-9 in distinct branch-end racemes, flower-stalks 1-2 cm. Flowers are
deep wine red or purple, 0.8-1.6 cm, tube 5-9 mm, densely scaly.
Tall Scaly Rhododendron is found in E. Himalaya to S. Tibet and China
(Yunnan), at altitudes of 3000-4000 m. Flowering: May-June.
