Periyar Habenaria is a terrestrial orchid with stem
10-15 cm high. Leaves are up to 5 x 2 cm, narrowly elliptic-lanceshaped
to elliptic-oblong, pointed, with a short sharp point, wedge-shaped at
base. Flowers are greenish-white, in 15 cm long spike; dorsal sepal
green, 10 x 6 mm, elliptic, pointed, dorsally 3-ribbed, 3-5 veined;
lateral sepals white, 12 x 6 mm, ovate, pointed, 5-veined. Petals are
green, 9 x 2 mm, linear-lanceshaped, sickle shaped, 2-veined; lip
greenish-white, 3-partite; lateral lobes 17 x 0.9 mm, thread-like,
pointed, recurved; midlobe 12 x 1 mm, linear, blunt. Spur is white, 25
x 2 mm, cylindrical, longer than ovary; column 5 x 4 mm; anthers sac 2
x 1.5 mm, anther canal 2 mm long, straight; stigma dark green,
kidney-shaped; ovary 1.5 cm long, shortly stalked. Periyar Habenaria is
endemic to Southern Western Ghats. Flowering: July-August.
