Botanical name: Vanda karinae Family: Orchidaceae (Orchid family)
Synonyms: Ascocentrum ampullaceum var. aurantiacum Manipur Orange Vanda is a tree-dwelling orchid,
tree-dwelling herbs 5 to 11 cm tall by 12 cm broad.
It is has for long been confused with
Flask-Shaped Vanda.
Leaves are strap-like,
flat, lightly bitten-off at tip, 9 cm long by 1.6 cm broad. Inflorescence is
an erect spike 4 cm tall with 15-20 concolor orange flowers 1.2 cm long
by 1.8 cm broad. Dorsal sepal is lanceshaped, 0.8 cm long by 0.3 cm broad,
Petals and lateral sepals lanceshaped 0.8 cm long by 0.3 cm broad. Lip
midlobe is lingulate, pointed at the downwardly curved tip, 0.3
cm long by 0.1 cm broad. Spur is cylindrical, curved backward, 0.7 cm long
by 0.1 cm broad but inflated near tip to 0.2 cm. Column is 0.3 cm long by
0.1 broad. Ovary is orange, 0.7 cm long by 0.1 cm broad, pollen violet.
Manipur Orange Vanda is endemic to Manipur. Flowering: March-May.
