Itchgrass is a tall annual grass, up to 1-4 m, taller
specimens often supported by stilt roots. Leaves are linear, up to 45 x
2 cm, with harsh prickly hairs on the leaf sheaths, unpleasant to the
touch. The common name Itchgrass comes from these bristly leaf-sheath
which can be irritating to the skin. Flower-racemes are 3-15 cm long,
spike-like cylindric, hairless. Spikelets appear sunken into the main
flower-stalk. Itchgrass is found in Tropical & Subtropical Africa, Asia
and Australia, including the Himalayas.
