Himalayan Goatsbeard is a plant up to 3 m tall, woody
at base. Stems are dark purplish, hairless. Leaves are 2- or 3-pinnate;
leaflet-stalks 4-10 mm; leaflets rhombic-ovate, ovate-lanceshaped, or
long elliptic, 5-13 x 2-8 cm, nearly hairless on both surfaces, base
wedge-shaped, margin irregularly toothed, tip tapering to long
tapering. Flowers are borne in lax panicle, 10-40 x 7-17 cm;
flower-cluster-stalk and flower-stalks becoming hairless in fruit;
bracts and bracteoles sparsely velvet-hairy. Flowers are 2-4 in
diameter; flower-stalk about 2 mm. Hypanthium is slightly velvet-hairy.
Sepals are spreading or erect in fruit. Male flowers with filaments
about twice as long as petals. Himalayan Goatsbeard is found in mixed
forests on mountain slopes, valleys, at altitudes of 1800-3500 m, from
Himalaya, China to Russian Far East and Japan. Flowering: June-August.
