Golden Dendrobium is a small, medium to large sized,
orchid dwelling on trees or rocks with yellowish, drooping to arching,
rod-like canes with basal pseuobulbous swellings that continue to
elongate for many seasons. The plant carries several, dark green,
papery, oblong-lanceshaped, wavy margined leaves. The plant blooms in
the summer and fall on a slender, drooping, 15 cm long, 9-12 flowered
inflorescnece with 2-4 flowers in groups arising from near the tip of
the previous years cane and carrying large fragrant flowers.
Flower-stalk and ovary are 3-4 cm. Flowers are spreading, thinly
textured, golden yellow, disk with a purple blotch on each side. Dorsal
sepal elliptic-oblong, 24-35 x 9-16 mm, pointed; lateral sepals oblong,
24-35 x 9-16 mm. Petals are oblong, 2.4-3.5 x 1.0-1.8 cm, lip nearly
round, 2-3 cm wide, above densely velvet-hairy, base shortly clawed,
claw with a callus, margin compound fringed. Column is about 4 mm.
Golden Dendrobium is found from Central Himalaya to Ne India and
China, at altitudes of 1000-2300 m.
